Ariake Gymnastics Centre was designed to function in two phases. The facility’s first role was as venue of Tokyo 2020 (Olympic Games) and Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games (for gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, trampoline, and boccia events), after which it was converted into an exhibition hall following the removal of the spectator stands.

The exhibition hall’'s design has been tailored to allow for an easy future disassembly, if so required, along the gymnastics center’s design emphasis on simplicity—in part also created by a strict budget and construction terms. Despite its modest design attributes, concise budget, and limited building leeway, Ariake Gymnastics Centre still shone bright to successfully serve as an iconic expression of Japanese culture and technology as a central venue at one the world’s largest sporting festivals.
