The Suzhou River, as the “mother river” of Shanghai, China, has nurtured the national industry and different varieties of lifestyles in Shanghai for a hundred years. However, accompanying its rich past has also been an unfortunate tragedy as the river also suffered a serious pollution problem that was generated in tandem with the growth of the city and eventually became a kind of “back alley of the city.” Over two decades of efforts, which began in the 1990s, the river has been gradually cleared and the spaces surrounding it have been revitalized and transformed into a proud example of a “typical demonstration area for a livable life in a mega-city.”
The river bund section located in the Huangpu District (Guangzhou, Guangdong Province), at the junction of the Suzhou River and the Huangpu River, has the highest historical concentration and is the core section marked for continuing transformation. In the “Su Phase 4” project, along the concept “Shanghai’'s classical times interpreted in a long scroll,” this area of the river was transformed from a “gray backside” to an “urban colorful living room,” and has become one of the most exciting waterfront spaces of Shanghai today. In the current post-pandemic era, where encounters and common experiences are more cherished, this historical yet modern, multifaceted yet open, and urban yet natural space will serve as a healing space for people—healing of memory, function, and nature—that brings them together. The space will be a place for people to gather, to regain confidence and strength, and to experience familiar feelings peace and happiness.
