Reflection on Nature

2024 Mar

Editorial

The advent of industrialization, urbanization, Internet information, and digital technology has not only transformed the natural environment but also reshaped the relationship between humans and nature. Contemporary Asian architecture, deeply rooted in the region's rich and diverse natural resources, reflects the thoughtful responses of Asian architects to the challenges posed by the natural environment.

The issue showcases a diverse range of architectural approaches, each uniquely addressing the complexities of culture, context, and craft within the framework of nature. They span from architecture and landscape design, representing an evolving dialogue between the built environment and the communities it serves, with nature at its core.

Trung Nguyen Garden by HGAA, Vietnam, and the Unfolding House by Pianjian/SKEW Collaborative, Singapore, exemplify a deep respect for local culture and the surrounding natural environment. These designs utilize local materials and passive techniques to strengthen the connection between space and nature, reflecting a commitment to both cultural and environmental harmony. The Kikkoman R&D Center by Nikken Sekkei LTD, Japan, and the lessera House by Fabian Tan Architect, Malaysia, demonstrate a commitment to sustainability and innovation, exploring contemporary paths to integrating living spaces with nature. Two Triangles by Architect-K, Korea, the Chuan Malt Whisky Distillery Landscape Design by ylyU Design, China, and Yadao Xishan Hotel Yixing by GOA, China, create a dialogue with the surrounding context through their architectural form and geometry. These designs innovatively use materials to speak to a more sustainable and socially conscious future, while respecting and integrating with the natural environment. Aluminum Grotto and Public Ground by Jenchieh Hung + Kulthida Songkittipakdee, Thailand, illustrates how architecture can mimic the natural environment through public space design, using simple but powerful forms to create an accessible and inclusive public space.

These eight projects not only serve their context but also contribute to the larger social and environmental fabric. They exemplify the ongoing dialogue between contemporary architecture and the natural world, establishing new ways for architecture to respect, enhance, and integrate with natural landscapes while responding to modern industrial and societal needs. Through these reflections on our relationship with nature, we gain insights into how architecture can contribute to a more sustainable and harmonious coexistence with the environment.
